Community Reinforcement and Family Therapy (CRAFT)

CRAFT is a scientifically-based intervention designed to help concerned significant others (CSOs) to engage with substance abusers current in treatment or refusing treatment. It is often the substance user who reports that family pressure or influence is the reason they sought treatment. In addition CRAFT teaches CSO’s skills to enhance their own lives, regardless of whether the person enters treatment. The five major goals of CRAFT are:

  1. To promote continued abstinence
  2. Reduce the risk of family violence
  3. Minimise distress and increase positive lifestyles for all family members
  4. Prepare to SCO to support the substance abuser during his/her treatment
  5. Prepare the CSO to suggest re-engagement in treatment if relapse occurs
